We were out in the New Forest today in the area that we used on the second day of selection... It looks slightly different when it's not covered in inches of snow!! And see, i actually did want to take a photo of you!
The hills were still there though! I know you all loved them.
Thought i'd have a look at the route you walked instead of doing any of the work i'm supposed to be doing...!
And then thought that you maybe ought to compare and contrast!!! Focus on the y axis units!

Cameras at the ready!
After a recent trip to the National History Museum and specifically the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibit, it definitely looks like cameras will be needed in the Summer. The winner of the 'Animals in their Environment' category was an awesome photo taken by Jochen Schlenker from a point on the TMB at the Lac des Chéserys.
We're now taking nominations for the official photographer of the group with the sole proviso that one of the pictures taken will win an award next year!

Faye's reflection on selection fun!
Waking up in the morning on the 18th of December, a Saturday, I was obviously both excited and nervous for next few days to come. Not only did I have that on my mind, but the fact that I had left packing my bag for the weekend to the last minute was not the greatest idea that I've ever had, resulting in me being the last person to arrive at where all the applicants were supposed to meet - great first impression, I know!
Now on most of the expeditions I've been on there's always something surprising that happens that you wouldn't necessarily have expected, and this selections weekend wasn't going to be an exception - so we were casually finding our way to Mel's house at around midnight, took a slightly wrong turn and ended up witnessing a car crash where the woman seemed definitely didn't seem with it! (edited by mel!!) Great.
After that, we got back to the house and started reluctantly setting up our tent. I felt like it was a dream come true when Mel and Jess said we could sleep inside that night, although pretty sure they made up for that suffering by making us climb yet another hill about 3000 times. It was pretty fun though, and we all even ended up racing each other with the little bit of energy we had left.
Going to bed at around 2 and waking up between 5 and 6 am was...nice. We ended up walking for what felt like a lifetime in the thickened snow doing some navigation skills and oh look...more hills. After doing so many hills however I was starting to get used to them, although energy levels were plummeting and having a drink of water was out of the question as all of my water had completely frozen.
In addition to that, the next few days we had to go and do little team building activities in the town of Weymouth, looking absolutely fantastic as you can imagine! Doing these activities with the team was really fun and helped us to bond even more.
The next day we sat indoors, snowed in and all snuggled up watching 'Cool Runnings'. We then went and met with Hannah where we climbed even more hills! My favourite!
Even through the physical toughness and bitingly cold weather, the selection weekend was amazing! I met some great people that I can't wait to go to Mont Blanc with, and this sounds cheesy but the excitement literally grows with each day!
Thanks Faye!!!

Still kit!
Ben was asking about Jess' magic material bag....
Saw some in the supermarket today (Asdas) for 43p and they have a bonus bumble bee on them! What more can you ask for?!
For those who missed the meeting Jess suggested having one of these for the plane or for when you pop into a village to get shopping and want to leave your rucksack behind...

Kit kit kit kit...
One last little post as a reminder of the places where you can get outdoorsy kit if necessary.
Don't hesitate to get in touch with any of us if you want advice on kit- as you may have gathered both Jess and Mel are very much Gear Junkies...
- Alpkit: Good stuff at excellent prices, also very good returns and warranty. Their stuff is only available online at http://www.alpkit.com/shop/ Dry bags are brilliant and light, and therma rests.
- Cotswolds Outdoor: Can be quite expensive but there are local stores so you could go in to try stuff on or check stuff out before buying online elsewhere. Website is http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/ Remember your DOE discount card gives you 15% off here.
- Go Outdoors: Good range of stuff at very good prices (provided you have/have access to a discount card- Mel and Jess are willing to lend theirs). They also do the price match and then take a further 10% off which can also be very, very useful! Even if you find something for a pound cheaper you also get the extra 10% so look at the internet and search for lower prices elsewhere. They can be found at http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ and there is a shop near Dock Gate 20 in Southampton.
- Mountain Warehouse: Another very well priced place with a lot of semi own-brand kit. Also have local shops at Castlepoint but can be found online at http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/ Look at the clearance and buy one get one free sections. We get lots of our DoE kit from here.
- Another useful place to consider if you are buying anything is Google Shopping. This can be very, very useful for finding the most bargainous kit and finding some great prices at some less well known online stores.

How high?!
The Tour du Mont Blanc is a series of footpaths creating a circuit of 180km (112 miles) around the highest mountain in Western Europe, Mont Blanc at 4,808m (15,774ft).
The highest point reached by the standard route is 2,584m (8,478ft) and the height gain (and therefore loss) around the whole Tour is around 10,600m (35,000ft). The height of Everest is 8848m!! This means we will be climbing a cummulative height greater than the highest point in the whole world!
Bring on the summer!
